SPECTOR THROUGH THE YEARS
"There were no bass pickups available, so I made a primitive one,
using a sewing-machine motor to wind the wire. I remember getting
little bar magnets and putting them in the middle of this wooden
core and winding it. It didn’t work great, but you could get a sound.
I made a tailpiece out of a brass bar, and the bridge was a piece of ebony."
~ Stuart Spector
Commenting on the first bass guitar he ever built
The history of SPECTOR® as a company has taken many interesting turns through the past three decades. One vital element has remained constant; Stuart Spector's love of creating musical instruments which are as beautiful to look as as they are to play.

The history of the SPECTOR® Basses and Guitars can be broken down into four distinct time periods:

The 1st SPECTOR® 5-String Bass

One of two made during the Brooklyn Era.  Fine neck inlay scroll work done by Vinny Fodera.  Vinny, like Ned Steinberger, got his start as a luthier and instrument designer working with Stuart.  Vinny was the first Full-Time SPECTOR® employee and is a good friend of Stuart's to this day.

During this period Stuart made many experimental models.  He honed his skills as a luthier and made several important connections with individuals who would help shape his small company.

In 1977 cabinet & furniture maker Ned Steinberger designs the NS-Bass™ and
SPECTOR® starts to see rapid growth due to demand for the NS-Bass™

KRAMER SPECTORS

Kramer Guitars of New Jersey purchases SPECTOR®. Stuart has the foresight to make keeping the SPECTOR® name unchanged as a condition of the purchase.  This would make SPECTOR® well known in the artist community.  Ironically this move also would cause Stuart to have to fight to regain the use of his own name when overnight Kramer Guitars went bankrupt and their assets became entangled in the Bankruptcy Courts.

PJ Rubal joins Stuart to resurrect SPECTOR® from the ashes of what had been Kramer Guitars.  Unable to use his former "Double S" headstock or previous model names such as the NS-2™ Stuart started making new designs such as the B.O.B bass and the JASON NEWSTED Signature Model™ bass.

He continued his legal battle to regain control of his past trademarks and copyrights.
